The term vertigo is used by many people to describe a sensation of giddiness of dizziness but these symptoms are common in patient with an anxiety neurosis or with transient upsets pf cerebral function of unlikeliest nature as well a in lesion of the auditory pathways. For these reasons it is convenient to restrict the term vertigo to the description of a subject feeling of movement of the external environment or of the brain with in the head. The movement maybe rotator or a feeling of displacement in one direction. Vertigo is always accompanied by a disturbance of balance which usually causes the patient to seek support and if sudden and serve may throw him to the ground. It often causes a reflex autonomic discharge leading to cold sweating pallor nausea vomiting and sometimes diarrhea bradycardia or even syncope.
